About this Heerenveen map poster
Heerenveen grew in the seventeenth century as a peat-digging settlement, and its name, roughly the lords' fen, still describes the landscape that shaped it. On the map that origin shows in long, straight waterways and streets laid out along them, a linear logic very different from the circular cores of older Dutch towns. The old canal known as the Heeresloot runs through the centre as the town's founding axis.
Around this core the town spreads in orderly residential districts, parks and sports grounds, all set against the flat Frisian countryside. The A7 and A32 motorways meet on the edge of town, and their broad interchange forms a bold geometric shape against the finer grain of streets, while polder ditches stretch outward in parallel lines toward the horizon.
Heerenveen is known well beyond Friesland for Thialf, the indoor speed skating stadium that has hosted many international championships, and for its football club.
