The map
Hoa Lư has a long history as a place name. In the tenth century it was the capital of Đại Cồ Việt under the Đinh and early Lê dynasties, before the court moved to Thăng Long, today's Hanoi. The modern city of Hoa Lư, formed from the former Ninh Bình city and the neighbouring district, now brings that ancient name together with the urban centre.
The map shows two landscapes meeting. On the eastern side, streets spread across the flat Red River delta, criss-crossed by the Đáy and Hoàng Long rivers and many canals. To the west and south, the ground suddenly breaks into limestone karst: tall, steep towers with narrow valleys, flooded caves and paddies winding between them.
That karst country is the Tràng An landscape complex, listed by UNESCO in 2014. The rowing routes through Tràng An and Tam Cốc follow waterways that look like thin, meandering lines between the dark hill shapes. On a Hoa Lư map poster, the tidy urban grid gives way to an almost abstract pattern of rock and water.

The tenth-century capital lay in a valley protected by karst ridges. Its temples to the Đinh and Lê kings remain landmarks in the surrounding landscape.
The Đáy and Hoàng Long rivers and many irrigation channels cross the eastern plain. They add long flowing lines around the newer city streets.
