The map

About this Huangmei map poster

Huangmei is a county in the far east of Hubei province, near the borders with Jiangxi and Anhui. The county seat sits on low, flat land north of the Yangtze. The map combines a modern urban grid with the water-rich countryside typical of the middle Yangtze: irrigation channels, ponds and lakes set among fields.

The town's newer districts are laid out in broad, straight blocks, while older lanes and villages on the fringes follow more irregular lines. To the north, the terrain rises toward hills. To the south, the plain opens out toward large lakes and the river, and waterways create an intricate, fragmented pattern.

Huangmei gave its name to Huangmei opera, one of China's best-known regional theatre forms. It is also closely linked to Chan Buddhism through the monasteries of the Fourth and Fifth Patriarchs in its hills. A Huangmei map poster shows the town between hill and water.

01

Modern town grid

New avenues and wide blocks form the core of the county seat, giving the centre a clear, orderly structure.

02

Lakes and channels

South of the town, lakes, ponds and irrigation canals break the land into fine, irregular shapes, characteristic of the Yangtze plain.

03

Northern hills

The land rises to the north, where roads narrow and wind. The monasteries associated with Chan Buddhism are in these hills.
