The map
Ihnāsīyah sits on the fertile land west of the Nile in Beni Suweif Governorate, close to the Bahr Yusuf canal. From above, the town is a dense cluster of streets surrounded by farmland. Straight irrigation channels and field boundaries run in every direction, and roads link the town to neighbouring villages and the provincial capital to the east.
Beneath and around the modern town are the remains of Herakleopolis Magna, one of the important cities of ancient Egypt. During the First Intermediate Period it was the seat of the rulers of the Ninth and Tenth Dynasties, who competed with Thebes for control of the country. Archaeologists still work on the site.
An Ihnāsīyah map poster shows the kind of place that has been lived in for thousands of years: canals, fields and a close-knit town on the same patch of the Nile valley. The pattern is simple and very old, and it translates cleanly into black and white.

Irrigation channels near the Bahr Yusuf divide the land into narrow fields, surrounding the town with a fine pattern of straight and gently curving lines.
The town lies on the western side of the valley, linked by roads to Beni Suweif and the Nile, in one of the oldest continuously farmed landscapes in the world.
