The map

About this Inhambane map poster

Inhambane occupies the tip of a peninsula on the southern side of Inhambane Bay, a broad, shallow inlet on the Mozambican coast. On a map, the town sits almost surrounded by water, with its small grid of streets opening onto the bay. Mangroves and tidal flats line the shores, and Maxixe lies directly across the water.

It is one of the oldest settlements on the East African coast, a trading port long before Portuguese colonial times. The historic centre still has buildings from that era, including an old cathedral. Dhows and ferries cross the bay to Maxixe, and the beaches at Tofo, on the ocean side of the peninsula, attract divers who come to see manta rays and whale sharks.

An Inhambane map poster gives much of its space to water: the wide bay, the curving peninsula and the tidal edges. The compact town sits at the centre. It is a calm, open composition that fits a place where life has long been oriented toward the sea.

01

Inhambane Bay

A broad, shallow bay surrounds the town on several sides. Its irregular shores and tidal flats give the map a soft, watery frame.

02

Peninsula town

The old town sits near the tip of a peninsula, its streets opening to the waterfront. This position shaped its long role as a trading port.

03

Across to Maxixe

The town of Maxixe faces Inhambane across the bay. Boats connect the two shores, and the crossing is a familiar part of the map.
