The map
Istiqlol lies in the Sughd region of northern Tajikistan, in the foothills of the ranges that edge the Fergana Valley. It was known for most of the twentieth century as Taboshar. The town was built around mining and grew as a planned Soviet settlement. That origin still shows from above in its orderly blocks, which contrast with the rough terrain surrounding them.
After independence the town took its current name, which means independence in Tajik. Its industrial past has left marks on the landscape around it, and the town has spent recent decades adjusting to life after the mines. The planned layout is still there: straight residential streets, rows of apartment blocks and a clear central axis.
An Istiqlol map poster sets two kinds of geometry against each other. On one side is the ruled lines of a planned town. On the other are the branching valleys and ridges of the foothills, where roads bend to follow the land. The map is simple and structured, with a strong sense of place at the meeting of mountains and valley.
Straight streets and regular blocks of apartment buildings give the town an ordered, geometric look. This is typical of settlements designed around a single industry.
The town sits where the mountains begin to rise. Roads leading out of it bend into valleys and along ridges, in contrast with the grid at the centre.
Roads descend from the town toward the lower, more densely settled land of the Fergana Valley. They connect this upland town to the wider region.

Why Istiqlol
Many people across Central Asia and the former Soviet Union have a family link to Taboshar and its mines. A map of Istiqlol connects the old name and the new in one quiet, graphic image.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example adding Taboshar as a subtitle. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Digital HD files are $9, and a free watermarked preview lets you check the layout first.
