Khowa, formerly known as Elliot, is a town in the northeast of the Eastern Cape, close to the southern end of the Drakensberg range. From above, it is an orderly grid of streets laid out on open ground, a typical plan for a South African country town. Beyond its edges, grassland and farms stretch toward mountains, and roads lead out across the high country.
The town took the name Khowa in the renaming of several Eastern Cape towns in recent years. It serves as a centre for the surrounding farming district and the villages around it. The setting is high and open, with cold winters, and the mountain scenery nearby draws people driving through the region's passes.
