Ogden sits on the Wasatch Front in northern Utah, between the Great Salt Lake basin and the steep western face of the Wasatch Range. From above, its streets form a precise grid of numbered streets and named avenues. They run straight until they meet the mountain slopes on the east, where Ogden Canyon cuts deep into the range.
The Weber and Ogden rivers meet on the west side of the city, and their tree-lined corridors cross the grid at angles. Nearby rail yards recall Ogden's role as a major junction after the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869. Union Station and Historic 25th Street still anchor the downtown blocks.
An Ogden map poster shows a city defined by its setting: long straight streets heading toward the mountains, foothill neighbourhoods curving into the slopes, and wide open ground to the west toward the marshes by the lake. Weber State University occupies a hillside campus, and trails climb from the edge of the city into the canyons of the Wasatch.
