Payson sits at the southern end of Utah Valley, where the valley floor meets the steep front of the Wasatch Range. Settled in 1850, it was laid out in the broad, square blocks typical of pioneer towns in Utah. From above, that grid is the defining feature: long, straight streets running with the compass, and blocks generous enough to read clearly at almost any scale.
To the east the grid stops where the mountains begin. Payson Canyon cuts into the range, and the Nebo Loop scenic byway starts here, climbing toward Mount Nebo, the highest peak in the Wasatch. To the west, Interstate 15 cuts diagonally along the valley, and farmland spreads toward Utah Lake in ruled rectangles.

At the town's eastern edge, Payson Canyon opens into the Wasatch. The Nebo Loop road starts here and winds up toward Mount Nebo in a series of switchbacks.

Interstate 15 runs across the valley at an angle to the grid, and its interchanges add sharp curves to an otherwise square composition.
