Port Alfred lies on the Sunshine Coast of the Eastern Cape, where the Kowie River meets the Indian Ocean. The town spreads along both banks, joined by bridges near the river mouth, while the Kowie curls inland through a wooded valley. Close to the mouth, the Royal Alfred Marina adds a network of residential canals, one of the most distinctive shapes on the local map.
The town's story goes back to the settlers who arrived in the region in 1820, and it grew as a small harbour serving the surrounding farmland. Today Port Alfred is known for wide beaches on either side of the river mouth, its golf course and the Kowie Canoe Trail, which follows the river upstream through thicket-covered hills.
