Stutterheim is in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, below the Amathole Mountains, north of Qonce. The town was established in the nineteenth century and named after Baron Richard von Stutterheim, who led a group of German settlers to the area. Several nearby places also carry German names.
From above, the old town is a compact grid of straight streets. Township areas and newer neighbourhoods spread out from it with their own patterns. To the north and west the land rises, and large areas of indigenous forest and plantations cover the mountain slopes.
