Terrain-bound streets
The built-up area follows the flatter ground available between slopes, giving the town an elongated, organic footprint rather than a neat square outline.

La mappa
Xialu Map Poster & Print
Xialu lies in the rugged eastern part of Chongqing Municipality, far from the dense river city at its centre. The land here is steep and folded, and settlements tend to occupy whatever gentler ground the slopes allow. On a map, the town's streets follow the lie of the land, so terrain dictates its outline more than any plan.
Roads in this part of China rarely run straight. They climb in switchbacks, thread along hillsides and pass through ridges, while newer routes cross valleys on long bridges and viaducts. Even at a small scale this gives the map lively, twisting line work that contrasts sharply with the regular grids of lowland towns.
A Xialu map poster turns that mountain geography into a clean graphic. With colour and relief removed, what remains is the essential pattern of movement: where streets gather because the ground permits it, and how routes bend to reach the next valley. It is a quiet portrait of a place shaped by its terrain.

Winding mountain roads
Routes leaving town curve and double back as they gain height, producing looping lines that stand out against the empty space of the hillsides.
Engineered crossings
Across this region, bridges and tunnels carry modern roads over valleys and through ridges, adding straight, confident strokes among the curving local lanes.
