The map

About this Itaobim map poster

Itaobim lies in the Jequitinhonha Valley in the northeast of Minas Gerais, on the banks of the river that gives the region its name. From above, the town stretches along the water, with a wide, sandy river channel forming one edge and the built-up area rising gently onto the slopes behind it.

The BR-116, one of Brazil's longest highways, passes through Itaobim and crosses the Jequitinhonha here. That makes the town a stop on the long route between the northeast and the south. On the map, the highway and its bridge are the most prominent lines, and a compact grid of local streets branches off them toward the centre.

Around the town, the landscape is hilly and fairly dry, with farmland and scrub covering the slopes. An Itaobim map poster brings together the river, the road and the town, showing a place defined by where it sits on the water and on one of the country's main routes.

01

Jequitinhonha River

The wide river channel runs along the town's edge. Its sandbanks and curves make the strongest natural shape on the map.

02

BR-116 crossing

The federal highway crosses the river at Itaobim, forming a long straight line through the frame and a clear link between the two banks.

03

Hillside streets

Local streets climb from the river onto the surrounding slopes, where the grid bends slightly to follow the uneven ground.
