The map
İzmit sits at the eastern end of the Gulf of İzmit, a long, narrow inlet of the Sea of Marmara. On a map the city runs as a thin band along the northern shore, pressed between the water and the hills behind it. Roads and the railway follow the coast in parallel, and industrial zones continue for kilometres in both directions.
The site has been settled since ancient times. As Nicomedia, it served as an eastern capital under the Roman emperor Diocletian. In more recent history the city is remembered for the powerful 1999 earthquake, which caused great destruction across the region and led to large-scale rebuilding.
An İzmit map poster shows a city defined by the gulf. The shoreline curves across the frame, streets climb the slopes to the north, and the transport corridors run in long parallel lines. It is a clear image of a place where water, industry and hills meet.
The narrow tip of the Gulf of İzmit gives the map its main shape: water enters from the west and ends right at the city.
Motorway, main roads and railway run alongside each other by the shore. Together they form a band of parallel lines across the city.
Residential districts climb the hills above the waterfront, and their streets become more winding as the ground rises away from the gulf.
