Sidareja lies in Cilacap regency, in the southwestern corner of Central Java, on low ground between the southern coast and the hills further inland. The land around it is intensively farmed, and on a map the town appears as a compact cluster set within a wide, finely divided field pattern.
A railway line runs through Sidareja, part of the route that crosses southern Java between Kroya and Banjar, and the station gives the town a clear axis. Roads fan out from the centre to surrounding villages, each marked by its own small group of houses. Rivers and irrigation channels cross the lowland in thin, winding lines.
