About this Jimma map poster
Jimma is the largest city in south-western Ethiopia, set in a green, well-watered upland region where coffee has been grown for centuries. From above, the city has a loose, organic shape: a central market district with converging roads, and neighbourhoods that follow the lie of the hills rather than a fixed grid.
Small rivers and streams cut through the town, their valleys showing up as breaks in the street pattern. Main roads radiate outward towards other towns in Oromia, and the campuses of Jimma University occupy large, clearly defined blocks within the city. On the northern side, the old palace of Abba Jifar stands on a hill above the town.
