About this Jingmen map poster
Jingmen sits in central Hubei, where low hills to the west give way to the broad plain of the Han River. The city's map shows a compact core stretched roughly north to south, with streets bending around wooded hills and several reservoirs. Farther out, the flatter land toward the Han opens into a quieter pattern of fields and villages.
The area has a long history as part of the ancient state of Chu. In 1993, bamboo slips found in a Chu tomb at Guodian, near Jingmen, turned out to contain the earliest known versions of passages from the Daodejing. The find changed how scholars read early Chinese philosophy. Today the city is known for petrochemicals and farming.
