The map

About this Jishou map poster

Jishou lies in the Wuling Mountains of western Hunan, the capital of the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. The city is squeezed into a narrow valley, and on a map it forms a long, winding shape following the river, with steep hills pressing in on both sides. Streets run along the valley floor, bridges cross the water, and tunnels and elevated roads connect the city's sections.

Jishou is a centre for the Tujia and Miao peoples of the region, and Jishou University is the main university in the prefecture. The surrounding area is known for its dramatic karst scenery, including the Dehang canyon area, and the old town of Fenghuang lies within the same prefecture, drawing many visitors to the region.

A Jishou map poster captures a city shaped by terrain. The built-up area follows the river in a narrow band, streets fan up side valleys, and empty slopes form the negative space around them. The result is one of the more unusual city outlines in China, ideal for a striking, graphic print.

01

River valley

The city stretches along its river through a narrow valley, so the built-up area appears as a long, winding band framed by the surrounding hills.

02

Bridges and tunnels

With little flat land, bridges cross the river at close intervals and roads tunnel through the hills, creating a distinctive, layered road network.

03

Karst hills

Steep forested hills surround the city on every side, leaving large empty areas on the map that sharpen the outline of the valley settlement.

Why Jishou

You can personalise the title and subtitle, including in Chinese or pinyin, and adjust the coordinates. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download the $9 HD files in six sizes, or order a printed poster, framed if you wish.
