The map
Juruti lies in western Pará, Brazil, on the southern bank of the Amazon River, between Santarém and the border with Amazonas. From above, the Amazon dominates. It is a wide band of water along the town's edge, with channels, lakes and islands on the floodplain nearby. The town itself is compact, with streets running back from the waterfront on firmer ground.
For much of its history, Juruti has been reachable mainly by boat, and the river remains its main connection to the rest of the region. The town is also known for bauxite. A large mine operates in the forest to the south, linked by a railway to a port on the river. Every year, the Festribal festival brings together two rival folklore groups, a highlight of local life.
A Juruti map poster shows a town defined by water and forest. The urban grid fills a small area beside the huge river, which takes up much of the frame. Lakes and channels are scattered across the lowland, giving the map a loose, fluid texture. It is an image of a very different kind of place, where the river matters more than any road.

The town's streets are set out on higher ground near the river. Together they form a small, fairly regular grid surrounded by forest.
Lakes, channels and seasonal waterways spread across the low ground nearby. On a map they appear as a scattering of irregular shapes.
