The map

About this Kalutara map poster

Kalutara lies on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, about an hour south of Colombo, at the mouth of the Kalu Ganga. The river is broad here and enters the Indian Ocean through a sandy estuary, dividing the town into northern and southern parts. The coastal Galle Road and the railway both run along the shore and cross the river on bridges.

Right beside the southern end of the road bridge is the Kalutara Bodhiya, a Buddhist temple complex with a large white stupa that is unusual because it is hollow and can be entered. Many travellers along the coast stop here briefly, and it is one of the best-known landmarks between Colombo and Galle.

A Kalutara map poster is framed by the estuary and the long straight coastline, with the town's streets following the shore and the river banks. Further inland, the grid loosens into lanes that wind through coconut and rubber land. It makes an elegant map with plenty of water.

01

Kalu Ganga estuary

The river widens as it reaches the ocean and forms sandbars and inlets. It is the central feature of the print and splits the town into two banks.

02

The coastal corridor

Galle Road and the coastal railway run side by side along the shore. Together they form a long, parallel spine through the whole town.

03

Temple by the bridge

The Kalutara Bodhiya stands at the southern end of the road bridge, and its grounds and stupa mark a clear landmark on the riverbank.

Why Kalutara

A map that means something

Kalutara means different things to different people: a family home on the coast, a beach holiday, or the stop at the temple on the drive south. A map of the estuary holds all of these memories in one simple image.

You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example with a wedding date or a family name. Choose from five styles, with Blueprint and Noir well suited to all the water. Download for $9 or order a printed poster.
