The map

About this Kanchipuram map poster

From above, Kanchipuram reads as a town organised by its temples. Large rectangular compounds, many of them walled and entered through tall gopurams, sit like anchors in the street pattern, and the lanes around them run in straight lines toward their gates. The Vegavathi, a small river, threads through the town, while the wider sandy bed of the Palar passes to the south.

Kanchipuram served as the capital of the Pallava dynasty, and some of South India's earliest structural stone temples stand here, including the Kailasanathar temple from around the eighth century. It is counted among the seven sacred cities of Hindu pilgrimage, and the town is often described in two parts, Shiva Kanchi and Vishnu Kanchi, after the deities of its main shrines.

The town is equally known for its silk. Kanchipuram saris, woven on handlooms in homes and workshops across the older neighbourhoods, carry the town's name across India. A Kanchipuram map poster keeps the geometry that underlies all of this: temple tanks as small solid squares, compounds as crisp outlines, and the web of residential streets that connects them.

01

Temple compounds

The Ekambareswarar and Varadharaja Perumal temples occupy large walled enclosures that show up as clear rectangles on the map, with streets bending around their corners and leading straight to their gateways.

02

Sacred tanks

Stepped temple tanks appear as neat geometric blocks of water scattered through the town, small but precise shapes that punctuate the dense residential streets around them.

03

The Palar riverbed

South of the centre the broad, often dry bed of the Palar runs east toward the Bay of Bengal, a wide band that frames the town's lower edge.
