About this Karlovac map poster
Karlovac was founded in 1579 as a military fortress on the frontier between the Habsburg lands and the Ottoman Empire. It was built to an ideal Renaissance plan, a six-pointed star with a regular street grid inside. That shape, known locally as the Zvijezda, is still clearly visible on the map today, outlined by green space where the ramparts and moats once stood.
Karlovac is often called the town on four rivers. The Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica and Dobra all flow through or near it, and their curving courses frame the old star and the newer districts that grew beyond it. Bridges, riverbanks and parks give the map a strong interplay of water and streets.
