The map

About this Karlovo map poster

Karlovo sits where the Balkan Mountains drop sharply into the valley below. On a map the effect is striking. The northern edge of town is set by contour lines that crowd together, and the southern side opens into flat farmland. The Stara Reka comes out of a gorge above the town and runs down through it, and the streets follow its course before spreading out across the gentler ground.

This is the upper end of the Rose Valley, the strip of land between the Balkan range and the Sredna Gora where oil-bearing roses have been grown for generations. Karlovo is also the birthplace of Vasil Levski, the nineteenth-century revolutionary many Bulgarians see as the founder of their national movement. The old quarter near the river keeps its irregular lanes. The newer blocks further south are laid out more regularly.

A Karlovo map poster shows the moment a mountain range meets a valley floor. The dense grain of the town fades into open fields, the river cuts a thin line through the middle, and the slopes above are left almost blank. The result is quiet and clearly bounded, a portrait of a town shaped as much by terrain as by planning.

01

Stara Reka gorge

The river leaves the mountains through a narrow cleft just north of town, then threads south through the streets, giving the composition a single strong line from top to bottom.

02

Mountain edge

The Balkan slopes stop the street network abruptly on the north side, so the town reads as a dense patch pressed against an empty band of steep ground.

03

Rose Valley floor

South of the centre the valley flattens out, and field boundaries and straight rural roads replace the tighter pattern of the older quarters.

Why Karlovo

A map that means something

Karlovo means a lot to people with roots in the Rose Valley and to anyone who knows the Levski story. On paper, the contrast between mountain and plain makes a calm, well-balanced image that holds up at large sizes.

Add a family name, a year or the town's coordinates to the title lines, then pick Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The HD files cost $9 and include every print size. Printed posters ship from partners in more than 30 countries.
