A city laid out as a fan, its streets radiating from the palace tower like the ribs of an unfolded fan

The map
Karlsruhe has one of the most recognisable city plans in Europe. It was founded in 1715 by Margrave Charles III William of Baden-Durlach, who placed his palace at the centre of a circle and had streets radiate outward from its tower. On the map the southern part of this circle forms the city, while to the north the lines continue into the forest as straight avenues.
The result is the so-called fan city, where roads spread outward from a single point and are crossed by the curving Zirkel and the long, straight Kaiserstraße. Later districts were added in regular grids around this core, and the Rhine port to the west adds a set of long, rectangular basins along the river.
Karlsruhe is the seat of Germany's Federal Constitutional Court and Federal Court of Justice, and home to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. A Karlsruhe map poster shows the full geometry of the plan: the fan of streets, the palace garden and the Hardtwald forest to the north. Few city maps anywhere are as graphic.
Thirty-two lines radiate from the palace tower, and nine of them form the streets of the city centre, a pattern that stays legible at any scale.
North of the palace, the radiating lines continue as straight paths through the Hardtwald, extending the plan into a large area of woodland.
West of the city, the long parallel basins of the Rhine harbour create a sharp industrial geometry, in contrast with the symmetrical fan of the historic centre.

Why Karlsruhe
Karlsruhe's plan is a design in its own right, so a map of the city works as a piece of graphic art as much as a souvenir. Students, lawyers and long-term residents often personalise the title with their district, a date or the coordinates of the palace.
Blueprint emphasises the geometric plan, Noir makes the fan glow, and Classic black & white, Paper and Sand give quieter versions. HD files cost $9 for six sizes as 300 DPI PNG and PDF. Printed posters on matte paper are also available, with a wooden frame if you like.
