The map

About this Kataragama map poster

Kataragama in Uva Province is one of Sri Lanka's most important pilgrimage sites. It is revered by Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims, as well as by the island's Vedda people, and its layout follows the sacred complex. The Menik Ganga curves past the town, and pilgrims bathe in it and cross it before walking to the shrines. River, crossing and temple ground form the core of the map.

The main devale is dedicated to the deity known as Kataragama or Skanda-Murugan and stands within a broad sacred precinct. A long avenue leads from it to the white Kiri Vehera stupa. Every year the Esala festival draws large crowds for its processions. The land around the town is dry scrub and forest, and Yala National Park lies not far to the south.

A Kataragama map poster captures a layout shaped by worship rather than commerce: the river on one side, the open precinct with its paths, and a modest grid of streets serving visitors. For people who have made the pilgrimage, it is a quiet reminder of the walk from the water to the shrines.

01

Menik Ganga

Pilgrims traditionally bathe in the river that winds past the town. On the map, its curve and the crossing to the sacred area form the most recognisable line.

02

Sacred precinct

The temple complex covers a large open area linked by walkways. On the poster it reads as a calm space with few buildings, set among the denser streets around it.

03

Kiri Vehera avenue

A straight path links the main shrine area to the Kiri Vehera stupa. This axis gives the composition a clear direction, running from devale to dagoba.

Why Kataragama

A map that means something

Many who buy this map have walked to Kataragama or attended the Esala festival with family. The print keeps that journey in view. The river and precinct are recognisable at a glance, and the design sits comfortably in a study or a hallway.

Add a title, a subtitle such as the year of your pilgrimage, and the coordinates. There are five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, and Sand and Paper suit the dry landscape well. Download the files for $9 or order a matte print.
