The map

About this Katō map poster

Katō lies in the interior of Hyōgo Prefecture, north of the Harima coastal plain. The city was formed in 2006 when three towns merged. The Kako River is the main line on the map: it winds through the area from north to south, and roads and settlements follow its valleys and the smaller streams that feed it.

Between these valleys, forested hills rise, while the lowland is divided into neat rice paddies. The Chūgoku Expressway crosses the city, and its long, sweeping line contrasts with the smaller roads between the fields. Built-up areas are scattered clusters, not a single dense centre, which gives a Katō map poster a relaxed, spread-out composition.

Katō is best known as one of the main growing areas for Yamada Nishiki, the rice variety prized for premium sake. Brewers across Japan buy rice from this part of Hyōgo. For anyone who follows sake, those neat paddies on the map are where some of the most sought-after rice in the country is grown.

01

The Kako River

The river runs through Katō from north to south. Its winding course organises the valleys, towns and roads around it.

02

Sake-rice paddies

Rice fields for Yamada Nishiki cover the lowlands in regular patterns, a fine grid between the river and the wooded slopes.

03

The expressway

The Chūgoku Expressway crosses the city in long, smooth curves. It is a clear, modern line that cuts through the older rural pattern.

Why Katō

A map that means something

Katō appeals to people who grew up in its valley towns and to sake enthusiasts who know the name from rice labels. This map keeps both in view: the river, the fields and the quiet settlements.

You can add a title, a subtitle and the coordinates line, for example the name of a brewery or a date. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper and Sand suit the rural subject well.
