The map

About this Kegalle map poster

Kegalle is the administrative centre of Kegalle District, in the foothills where the lowlands of western Sri Lanka begin to rise toward the central highlands. The town stretches along the main Colombo–Kandy road, and its streets branch off this spine into low hills, narrow valleys and small streams. The pattern is linear rather than gridded, shaped by the terrain and the highway.

The surrounding district has long been known for rubber plantations. The hillsides around town are covered in trees and home gardens, with patches of paddy on the valley floors. Kegalle District is also home to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, a short distance away near Rambukkana and one of the best-known stops for travellers heading between Colombo and Kandy.

A Kegalle map poster shows a town that follows the land. The main road curves through the frame, side streets climb and dip with the hills, and the built-up area thins into green countryside on every side. In black and white, the relationship between road and terrain becomes clear and graceful. It makes a considered print for anyone with ties to Sabaragamuwa.

01

Colombo–Kandy road

The A1 highway is the backbone of the town. This long, curving line carries traffic between the capital and the hills, and the main commercial streets gather around it.

02

Valley streets

Side roads leave the highway and wind into valleys and up slopes. The irregular, branching pattern they make mirrors the folded terrain of the foothills.

03

Plantation surroundings

Beyond the centre, the map opens into rubber land, paddy and village gardens. Scattered paths and small roads cross this landscape and frame the town's compact core.
