The map
Kentau lies in the Turkistan region of southern Kazakhstan, where the Karatau mountains descend toward the steppe and the Syr Darya valley. The town was founded in the mid-twentieth century to serve the metal-ore mines in the nearby hills. From above, that origin is obvious: a regular grid of streets and blocks, laid out to a plan rather than grown over time.
The mountains rise directly behind the town. On the map, the grid meets their slopes abruptly, and roads turn into winding tracks toward the old mine sites. The historic city of Turkistan, home to the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, lies a short distance to the south-west across the plain. Together they form one of the most interesting parts of the country's south.
A Kentau map poster highlights the clarity of a planned town. Straight avenues and rectangular blocks form a disciplined pattern, in contrast with the free lines of the mountain valleys beyond. For people who grew up here, or whose families worked in the mines, it is a precise and dignified record of home.
Straight avenues and evenly sized blocks give the town its orderly, almost diagrammatic look, a direct legacy of its mid-century planning.
The mountain range rises right behind the town, and the map shows the grid giving way to curving roads and tracks leading into the hills.
Roads toward the old mine sites and industrial areas extend beyond the residential blocks, tracing the reason the town was built in the first place.
