About this Khāsh map poster
Khāsh lies in Nimroz province, in the arid southwest of Afghanistan near the Sistan basin. The town takes its name from the Khash River, one of the seasonal rivers that drain towards the wetlands and lakes on the Iran border. On a map, the river and its irrigated land are the most important features for many kilometres.
The settlement follows the water. Fields, canals and villages form a band along the river's course, while beyond them the land opens into wide desert with few roads. The contrast between the cultivated strip and the bare plain is one of the defining patterns of this region.
