About this Kindia map poster
Kindia lies about 135 kilometres north-east of Conakry, where the coastal lowlands give way to the hills that rise toward the Fouta Djallon plateau. The town sits in a valley below steep, forested heights. On a map its streets spread across the valley floor, with a denser core around the market and the administrative centre and looser neighbourhoods toward the slopes.
The main road from Conakry to the interior passes through Kindia, and so does the route of the old Conakry–Niger railway, one of the earliest lines in French West Africa. These corridors give the town its main axes, with smaller streets branching off into residential quarters and gardens. Where the hills close in, the street pattern stops and the contours take over.
The region is known for its fruit, especially bananas and pineapples, and for waterfalls in the nearby hills, the best known being the Voile de la Mariée, or Bride's Veil.
