The map

About this Kisangani map poster

Kisangani sits where the Congo River changes character. Upstream lie the Boyoma Falls, a chain of cataracts once known as Stanley Falls; downstream the river stays navigable for roughly 1,700 kilometres to Kinshasa. That position made the town a transfer point for boats, rail and road, and its streets still press toward the water along the northern bank.

The main city occupies the right bank, with a colonial-era grid of avenues near the river and looser neighbourhoods extending toward the forest edge. The Tshopo River, which gives the province its name, joins the Congo at the city, and its own falls lie close by. Across the main river, the left bank holds a smaller settlement reached by pirogue and ferry.

Known as Stanleyville until 1966, Kisangani was one of the principal cities of the colonial Congo and later a focal point in the country's politics. A Kisangani map poster keeps the essentials: the heavy sweep of the river, the thin line of the Tshopo and a street pattern that thins out quickly into the surrounding rainforest.

01

The Congo bend

The river is broad here, wider than many of the city's districts, and dominates any frame. On the poster it becomes a wide pale band that anchors the whole composition.

02

Tshopo confluence

The Tshopo joins from the north, drawing a narrow second waterway into the city and dividing its neighbourhoods into distinct sections on the right bank.

03

Riverside grid

Near the port, straight avenues laid out in the colonial period form a compact grid, which gives way to irregular lanes and tracks as the city reaches the forest.

Why Kisangani

A map that means something

For people who grew up in Kisangani, studied at its university or worked on the river, the map holds a whole geography of memory in a single sheet. The shape of the river alone is recognisable to anyone who has spent time there.

Add a family name, a date or a short line in the subtitle and adjust the coordinates text if you like. Choose one of five styles, from Classic black & white to Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand; Sand gives the river a warm, earthy tone.
