The map

About this Köneürgenç map poster

Köneürgenç lies in northern Turkmenistan near the border with Uzbekistan, on the irrigated lowland shaped by the Amu Darya as it approaches the old Aral basin. The modern town is laid out in straight streets and blocks, and around it spread long rectangular fields cut by canals and drainage ditches, with open desert pressing in beyond the cultivated edge.

At the edge of the town lie the remains of Kunya-Urgench, once the capital of Khwarezm and a major city on the caravan routes of Central Asia. The site is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its monuments include the tall brick minaret of Kutlug Timur and the mausoleum of Turabeg Khanum, whose tiled dome is among the finest in the region.

A Köneürgenç map poster brings the two layers together: the regular pattern of the present-day town, the scattered paths and open ground of the historic site, and the canals drawing long parallel lines across the land. In black and white the landscape becomes almost abstract, a record of how water has organised life in this corner of the desert.

01

Canal network

Irrigation channels run across the plain in long straight strokes and gentle curves, dividing the farmland into narrow plots and giving the whole map a finely ruled texture.

02

Ancient Urgench

The protected area of old Urgench sits beside the modern streets, its open ground and scattered monuments reading as a quieter, less structured zone within the frame.

03

Desert edge

Beyond the cultivated land the map empties quickly into desert, so the town and its fields appear as a dense island whose outline is set by where irrigation stops.
