The map

About this Kokkola map poster

Kokkola lies on the Gulf of Bothnia in Central Ostrobothnia, on flat ground where the Finnish coast breaks into bays, low islands and skerries. From above, the centre is a regular grid of streets. It thins out into residential areas and forest, and the harbour and industrial zone sit out on the shore to the northwest, some distance from the old town.

That distance comes from land uplift. Since the last ice age, the ground here has been rising slowly, and the sea has pulled back. The original harbour silted up, and the port had to move further out over time. Kokkola was founded in 1620 and is bilingual, known in Swedish as Karleby. Its old quarter, Neristan, still has a network of low wooden houses on narrow lanes.

A Kokkola map poster shows a coastline in the middle of that change: inlets turning into meadows, islands joining the mainland, and a town grid that ends before the water does. In black and white, the orderly centre, the scattered shore and the many small islands offshore make an unusually quiet composition.

01

Neristan old town

The old wooden quarter north of the centre has a finer street pattern than the rest of town, with short blocks and narrow lanes that were laid out long before the modern grid.

02

English Park

A small park commemorates an 1854 clash during the Crimean War, when local defenders captured a British boat. It is a green patch near the water on the edge of the centre.

03

Rising shoreline

Because of land uplift, the coast is broken into shallow bays, reed-edged inlets and islands. On the map it looks fragmented, with the port set far out from the historic core.

Why Kokkola

A map that means something

Kokkola suits anyone with a feeling for the Bothnian coast: the long light, the wooden houses, the sea that retreats a little every generation. A map is a fitting way to hold a place whose outline is still slowly being drawn.

You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the Swedish name Karleby or a year. The five styles are Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. HD files come in six print sizes as 300 DPI PNG and print-ready PDF.
