Compound pattern
Housing is arranged in clusters of family compounds, which gives the map a distinctive cellular texture unlike the block grids of larger cities.

The map
Kolia lies in the north of Ivory Coast, in the Savanes District, in open country of grassland, scattered trees and cultivated fields. From above, the town is a low, spreading settlement of streets and family compounds, denser near the centre and gradually more open toward its edges. There is no coastline or large river to frame it, so the map relies on the pattern of the town itself.
It is the chief town of a sub-prefecture and a local centre for the surrounding villages, with roads and tracks linking it to the wider region. Farming shapes the landscape, and on a detailed map the boundaries between fields and the paths that cross them can be as expressive as the streets. The layout is informal, formed by gradual growth over generations.
A Kolia map poster has an organic, hand-drawn quality, closer to a textile pattern than to a city grid. Sand and Paper both suit that warmth, while Noir turns the network of paths into fine light lines on a dark ground. A moderate zoom, showing the town and a margin of countryside, usually gives the most balanced composition.
Housing is arranged in clusters of family compounds, which gives the map a distinctive cellular texture unlike the block grids of larger cities.
Roads leave Kolia toward neighbouring towns and villages of the Savanes, forming the few long, continuous lines on an otherwise finely broken map.
Around the settlement, fields and open land stretch in every direction, so the town appears as a clear, rounded shape surrounded by quiet space.

Why Kolia
A map of Kolia is above all a family object: a way for people from the town, living in Abidjan or abroad, to keep the shape of home in sight. It is also a thoughtful gift for parents or elders who helped build the place.
Write the title and subtitle in French or English, add coordinates or a date, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Digital HD files cost $9, and matte prints ship from partners in more than 30 countries.
