The map

About this Kotikawatta map poster

Kotikawatta lies on the eastern side of the Colombo metropolitan area in Sri Lanka's Western Province. The land is low and flat, and much of it sits close to water. From above, the area is a close mesh of residential lanes and main roads, interrupted by marshes, paddy land and canals that drain towards the Kelani River to the north.

It is a suburban area rather than a separate city, closely tied to Colombo by daily commuting and trade. The Kotikawatta map poster shows that in-between character. Built-up blocks crowd along the main roads, and open, watery ground holds the spaces between them, which the city has not fully filled.

In monochrome, the result is a lively contrast of textures. Tight lanes and small plots sit next to wide, empty wetland areas, and winding channels connect the two. It is an honest picture of the green, wet edge of a growing capital, drawn without labels or colour.

01

Dense residential lanes

Narrow streets fill the built-up areas in a close, irregular mesh. They make up most of the detail in the print.

02

Wetlands and paddy

Low marshy ground and fields break up the suburban fabric. On paper they appear as calm open spaces among the crowded streets.

03

Canals towards the Kelani

Drainage channels wind through the area towards the river to the north. They add soft, flowing lines to the composition.
