The map

About this Kraków map poster

Kraków's Old Town has one of the clearest city plans in Europe. The grid was laid out in 1257, and at its centre the Main Market Square opens as a vast rectangle, among the largest medieval squares on the continent. Most of the old walls were torn down in the nineteenth century and replaced with the Planty, a ring of gardens that still traces the outline.

At the southern tip of that ring, Wawel Hill rises beside the Vistula, where the river makes a wide bend. Just beyond lies Kazimierz, the former Jewish town, with its own tighter streets and squares. Across the water, Podgórze climbs toward the hills. To the west, the open meadow of Błonia leaves a large clear shape on the map.

Further east, Nowa Huta shows a completely different idea of planning: a post-war socialist town with avenues radiating from a central square. The historic centre was on the first UNESCO World Heritage list in 1978. A Kraków map poster can hold both worlds, the medieval core and the twentieth-century city, in a single frame.

01

Planty ring

A continuous belt of park surrounds the Old Town. It follows the line of the former walls and gives the centre an unmistakable closed outline.

02

Main Market Square

The great square sits in the middle of a regular grid, with the Cloth Hall running through it. From above it reads as a large pale rectangle.

03

Vistula bend

The river curves around Wawel and Kazimierz before heading east. It separates the historic districts from Podgórze and adds one strong, flowing line to the map.

Why Kraków

A map that means something

Kraków is a city of students, returning visitors and families with roots in Lesser Poland. Its compact centre makes a map you can recognise at a glance, even if you spent only a few days walking the Planty.

Put your own words in the title and subtitle, perhaps a graduation year or the name of a street, and adjust the coordinates line. Pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then choose between $9 HD files and a framed print.
