The map

About this Krasnodar map poster

Krasnodar sits on the right bank of the Kuban River, which swings around the city's southern and western sides in wide loops before heading on to the Sea of Azov. From above, the river and its old cut-off meanders frame the built-up area like a loose parenthesis. The large reservoir upstream to the east adds a broad pale shape to any wider crop of the city.

The centre keeps the regular grid laid out after the Black Sea Cossacks founded the settlement as Yekaterinodar in 1793. Long parallel streets run north from the river and are crossed at even intervals. Krasnaya Street forms the spine of the old town and turns into a pedestrian promenade on weekends. The city has carried its present name since 1920.

Further out, the grid loosens into newer districts, rail lines and the wide arcs of arterial roads. The park built beside the Krasnodar football stadium shows up as a patch of curving paths among the straight blocks. A Krasnodar map poster at district scale shows how orderly the historic core is compared with the neighbourhoods that have grown around it in recent decades.

01

Kuban River loops

The river curves around the south of the city and has left crescent-shaped oxbow lakes behind it. On the poster these read as fine arcs that soften the straight lines of the centre.

02

Yekaterinodar grid

The historic core is laid out as a near-rectangular grid of long blocks running north from the river. Printed in black and white, it becomes a crisp, even lattice that fills the middle of the frame.

03

Krasnaya Street spine

The main historic avenue runs straight through the centre for a long stretch and closes to traffic on weekends. It is the single strong line that anchors the whole composition.
