The map
Kriens is next to the city of Lucerne in central Switzerland, and on a map the boundary between the two is barely visible. The dense part of town fills the valley floor south and west of Lucerne. From there the streets begin to climb, bending and thinning as they reach the forested lower slopes of Pilatus.
The mountain gives the place its character. The gondola and cable car to the summit of Pilatus start in Kriens, and on a clear day the peak is visible from almost everywhere in town. From above, the change is sharp. A tight urban grid gives way to curving hillside roads and then to open, steep terrain.
A Kriens map poster captures that transition from city to mountain in a single frame. At a wider zoom, Lake Lucerne enters the composition to the northeast, and the full relationship between the urban area and the alpine foothills becomes clear.
South and west of town, the land rises steeply toward Pilatus. Roads turn into switchbacks and scattered lanes on the upper part of the map.
Kriens runs straight into the city of Lucerne, and the dense street network continues across the municipal line without a break.
The core of the town occupies the flat ground of the valley, where the densest blocks and main roads lie close together.

Why Kriens
For people who live beneath Pilatus, or who took the gondola up once and remember it, this map holds both the town and the mountain. It is a clean piece for a Swiss flat or a gift for someone who moved away.
