Kriva Palanka lies in the northeast of North Macedonia, close to the border with Bulgaria, in the valley of the Kriva river between the Osogovo mountains and neighbouring ranges. From above, the town is long and narrow, with streets following the river and the main road through the valley.
The town's name comes from the Kriva, meaning crooked, and the river lives up to it on the map, bending through the valley floor. A short distance from the centre is the Osogovo Monastery, dedicated to St Joachim of Osogovo, one of the best-known monasteries in the country, set on a wooded hillside.
