The map
Kumanovo lies in the north-east of North Macedonia, not far from the border with Serbia. It is built on an open plain, and from above its centre is a dense, irregular web of streets, the older part of town, surrounded by more regular blocks of later housing. The land rises gently towards hills at the edges, and a small river runs through the town.
The town gave its name to the Battle of Kumanovo in 1912, a major engagement of the First Balkan War fought on the surrounding plain. Today Kumanovo is one of the country's largest towns, with a mixed Macedonian and Albanian population, and it sits on key road and rail routes running north towards Serbia.
A Kumanovo map poster reveals the layers of a Balkan town: winding streets at the historic heart, straighter lines further out, the river crossing through and main roads heading off across the plain. In black and white, those layers become an easily readable record of how the town grew over time.

A small river runs through Kumanovo, with streets and bridges following its course. It brings a soft, winding line to the middle of the map.
Main roads and the railway head out across the open plain in long lines, connecting Kumanovo to Skopje and to the Serbian border to the north.
