The map

About this Kyaikkami map poster

Kyaikkami, known in British times as Amherst, lies on the coast of Mon State in southern Myanmar, south of Mawlamyine, facing the Gulf of Martaban. From above, the town is a small network of streets on low, flat ground. Beaches and tidal flats edge the shore, and paddy fields stretch inland behind the houses.

The town's best-known landmark is Yele Paya, a pagoda built out over the water at the end of a long covered causeway, which appears to float at high tide. Kyaikkami also has a place in missionary history. Ann Judson, wife of the American missionary Adoniram Judson, died and was buried here in 1826.

A Kyaikkami map poster is shaped by the shoreline. The gentle curve of the coast, the straight line of the causeway reaching into the sea and the compact streets of the town give the design a quiet balance. It is a small place with a distinctive outline, well suited to a clean, minimalist print.

01

Yele Paya causeway

A long walkway leads from the shore to the pagoda standing in the sea. On the map it appears as a thin, straight line projecting from the coast, the most recognisable detail in the composition.

02

Low coastal ground

The town sits on low land close to the water. The outline of the shore, with its sandbanks and tidal flats, frames the streets on the seaward side.

03

Compact street network

Streets form a small, orderly network in the centre that reads easily at any poster size, with lanes thinning out toward the fields and the coast.

Why Kyaikkami

A map that means something

Kyaikkami is dear to people from Mon State and to visitors who have walked the causeway to Yele Paya. A map of the town is a calm, personal piece that records the meeting of land, sea and a sacred place.

Add a title, perhaps Kyaikkami or Amherst, a subtitle and your own coordinates line. Choose from five styles, from Classic black & white to Sand. The HD package costs $9, and printed posters ship from partners in more than 30 countries.
