The map

About this Kyustendil map poster

Kyustendil lies in western Bulgaria, close to the borders with North Macedonia and Serbia. From above, the town fills the southern edge of a wide, flat valley, and its streets begin to climb as the land rises toward the Osogovo mountains. Orchards and fields surround the built area.

The town has been known for its hot mineral springs since Roman times, when it was called Pautalia. Remains of the Roman baths survive in the centre. Above the town rises Hisarlaka hill, with the ruins of a fortress in a wooded park.

Kyustendil is also linked with the painter Vladimir Dimitrov, known as the Master, whose work shaped the town's art gallery. A Kyustendil map poster shows a valley town opening onto farmland on one side and rising into the mountains on the other.

01

Hisarlaka hill

A wooded hill above the town holds the ruins of an old fortress, a green shape that the streets curve around on the map.

02

Roman baths

The centre has the remains of Roman-era baths from Pautalia, near the mineral springs that still supply the town's spa.

03

Valley and mountain

Flat farmland spreads to the north while the Osogovo foothills rise to the south, giving the map two very different halves.
