La Azulita sits in the state of Mérida in western Venezuela, on the northern slopes of the Andes where the mountains drop toward the lowlands around Lake Maracaibo. The town lies at a moderate altitude with a mild, humid climate. From above, its streets do not form a regular grid. They bend and step with the terrain, and the town centre fits onto whatever flatter ground the slope allows.
