Schmalkalden lies on the southwestern edge of the Thuringian Forest, in a valley where the Schmalkalde stream flows through. The old town is exceptionally well preserved. Its lanes form a tight, irregular core lined with half-timbered houses, and newer districts spread out along the valley floor and up the lower slopes.
The town has a place in European history. In 1531 Protestant princes and cities formed the Schmalkaldic League here to defend the Reformation, and the Schmalkald Articles written by Martin Luther take their name from the town. Above the centre stands Wilhelmsburg Castle, a Renaissance palace.
A Schmalkalden map poster brings out the density of a medieval town set in a narrow valley. The old centre is a knot of short, winding streets. Roads follow the stream and the valley's contours, and the wooded hills around it leave the edges of the frame open and calm.

Wilhelmsburg Castle
The Renaissance castle stands on the hillside above the old town. Its grounds appear as a distinct shape overlooking the tangle of streets below.
Valley setting
The town follows a valley on the edge of the Thuringian Forest. Streets stretch along the stream, giving the map a long, directional shape.
