The lake
Lake Como lies in Lombardy at the foot of the Alps, and its outline is one of the most recognisable of any lake in Europe. A single northern basin splits into two southern branches, one ending at the city of Como and the other at Lecco. From above, it looks like an upside-down letter Y set between steep mountain slopes.
It is also one of the deepest lakes in Europe, reaching more than 400 metres, and its shores rise sharply from the water. Towns such as Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Tremezzo occupy narrow strips of flat land. Roads follow every curve of the shoreline to connect them, and ferries cross between them.
The Adda River flows in at the northern end and leaves through the Lecco branch, so the Como arm has no natural outlet. A Lake Como map poster shows the whole shape at once. Villa gardens, lakeside villages and the thin road lines along each shore add detail to a strikingly simple silhouette.
Where the three arms meet, the Bellagio promontory forms a wedge of land pointing north, with the village gathered at its tip.
The southwestern arm narrows as it winds toward the city of Como, whose historic centre sits on a small flat plain at the very end of the lake.
Roads run along both sides of the lake close to the water, often through tunnels or on ledges. Their thin continuous lines emphasise the lake's outline.

Why Lake Como
Lake Como is a common choice for wedding and honeymoon posters, and for anyone who has spent a summer on its shores. Its distinctive Y shape makes a composition that even guests who have never been there will recognise.
Add names and a wedding date in the title and subtitle, or keep the coordinates line as a quiet caption. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, then download six print sizes for $9 or order a framed matte print.
