The map

About this Łęczyca map poster

Łęczyca lies in central Poland on the flat, marshy plain of the Bzura River. For centuries it was one of the country's important seats of power. Its compact old town keeps the pattern of a medieval chartered town: a central market square with streets leading away to the edges of what were once defensive lines. Low meadows and waterways surround it on the map.

The brick castle was built in the fourteenth century under King Casimir the Great and still stands at the edge of the old town. Local legend says the devil Boruta lives in its cellars. A few kilometres away, the village of Tum has a Romanesque collegiate church from the twelfth century, one of the most important early medieval buildings in Poland.

A Łęczyca map poster captures a town whose outline has changed little in its basic structure. The market square forms a clear central block, the castle anchors one side, and the flat plain spreads out with watercourses and fields. In black and white, the medieval layout stands out sharply against the open, level land of central Poland.

01

Royal castle

The fourteenth-century castle of Casimir the Great sits at the edge of the historic centre. Its compact footprint is easy to pick out from the surrounding streets.

02

Market square core

A rectangular square lies at the centre of the old town, with streets leading outward in the regular pattern of a medieval chartered town.

03

Bzura lowlands

The Bzura and its meadows spread across flat ground around the town, giving the map soft lines of water and wide, open space beyond the built-up area.
