The map

About this Lovech map poster

Lovech lies in northern Bulgaria, where the foothills of the Balkan Mountains open onto the Danube plain. The Osam River winds through the middle of the town and divides the map into two sides. On one bank is a modern centre of broad streets and blocks. On the other, a steep old quarter climbs toward a fortified hill.

That old quarter, Varosha, is a tight web of cobbled lanes and nineteenth-century houses, and the Hisarya hill above it holds the remains of the medieval fortress. Elsewhere, the wooded Stratesh hill rises as a park. A Lovech map poster frames this rare combination of river, hills and historic streets within a compact town.

The town's best-known landmark is its covered bridge over the Osam, first built by the master builder Kolyu Ficheto in the 1870s and reconstructed in the twentieth century after a fire. Lovech is also closely associated with Vasil Levski, the leader of the Bulgarian liberation movement, who used the town as a base. A museum in Varosha is dedicated to him.

01

Covered Bridge

The pedestrian bridge crosses the Osam at the heart of town, linking the modern centre with the old quarter. On the map it forms a short, decisive line across the river.

02

Osam River

The river loops through Lovech in tight curves, separating neighbourhoods and giving the map a flowing central line, with parks and embankments along its banks.

03

Varosha and Hisarya

On the slope above the river, narrow old lanes lead up to the fortress hill, whose outline appears as an open, raised area at the edge of the historic quarter.
