About this Lutsk map poster
Lutsk is the main city of Volyn in northwestern Ukraine, set on the Styr River. On a map its most striking feature is the old town, which sits on a raised promontory almost enclosed by a bend of the river and its former channels. Around it the city spreads outward in layers: nineteenth-century streets, Soviet-era avenues and large residential districts reaching in several directions.
At the heart of the old town stands Lubart's Castle, a brick fortress named after the fourteenth-century prince who rebuilt it. It appears on Ukraine's 200 hryvnia banknote and is among the best-preserved castles in the country. Around it, churches, monasteries and narrow streets reflect centuries in which Lutsk was shared by Orthodox, Catholic, Jewish and Karaite communities.
