The map

About this Luzhou map poster

Luzhou sits at the confluence of the Yangtze and the Tuo River in southern Sichuan. The old city centre occupies a peninsula between the two rivers, so on the map it appears as a dense wedge of streets surrounded by water on three sides. Bridges radiate from this point to the districts on the opposite banks.

Beyond the peninsula, the terrain is hilly, and newer districts climb the slopes on both sides of the Yangtze. Streets curve with the contours, and the rivers loop through the landscape in broad bends, giving the city a layered, irregular outline.

A Luzhou map poster shows a city defined by its rivers and their meeting point. Luzhou is famous throughout China for baijiu, particularly Luzhou Laojiao, whose old fermentation pits are among the longest in continuous use in the country. The river trade that once carried its liquor is written into the city's shape.

01

River confluence

The Tuo River meets the Yangtze at the tip of the old city, creating a peninsula that forms the historic heart of Luzhou.

02

Yangtze bridges

Several bridges cross the wide Yangtze and the Tuo, linking the peninsula to districts on the far banks and forming strong lines across the water.

03

Hillside districts

Outside the centre, streets wind across hills and slopes, a looser, curving network that contrasts with the dense core by the rivers.
