Maganja sits in Zambezia Province in central Mozambique, a district town of roughly eighteen thousand people on the low, flat country that runs toward the Indian Ocean. It is often known by its fuller name, Maganja da Costa, which points to its place in the coastal part of the province. From above, the settlement reads as a modest, contained cluster rather than a sprawling city.
On the map, the centre appears as a short run of intersecting streets, with a denser patch where the town's everyday life is concentrated. Beyond that core the lines thin out quickly.
